If you’re planning a family trip to London and want to sneak in a little science, geography, and Instagram-worthy fun without blowing your travel budget, you’ve probably come across the famous Prime Meridian Line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. But here’s the thing—entry for a family of four can easily top £100.

So, is there a way to stand on the Prime Meridian without paying Observatory admission?

Yes. Yes, there is. And it’s one of the best travel hacks we found during our London trip.

We’re a family that loves mixing learning with adventure (and saving where we can), so visiting Greenwich was on our list. It’s a quick break from the hustle and bustle of Central London and makes for a peaceful day trip with plenty to explore. The walk up to the Royal Observatory is scenic, and the views over London are absolutely worth the trek.

But a trip to London is expensive enough and when I saw the prices for admisstion to the Royal Observatory, I began looking for another alternative.

Fortunately, my husband reminded me that the line has to go somewhere 🙂

Enter: The hidden Prime Meridian photo spot.

Instead of heading into the ticketed area, take a slight detour. Just to the right of the Royal Observatory entrance gates, you’ll see a small side path. Follow it a few steps and look for an unassuming gate (it might appear closed, but give it a gentle push—it usually opens).

What you’ll find is a lesser-known but totally legit Prime Meridian marker with a well-worn stone plaque above a brass line in the pavement.

The Prime Meridian in Greenwich

This is the spot. You’re literally standing with one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere and one in the Western Hemisphere—no ticket needed. It’s not as flashy as the official observatory display, but it’s every bit as fun (and way more budget-friendly).

Pro tip: Go early or on a weekday to avoid having to wait for a clear photo op, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Make a day of it in Greenwich.

Even if you skip the Observatory ticket, the rest of Greenwich still offers plenty for families. The Queen’s House and National Maritime Museum are both free to enter and surprisingly kid-friendly with interactive exhibits.

You can also grab lunch at Greenwich Market (so many food stalls!) or have a picnic in Greenwich Park, which offers loads of space for kids to run around and burn off energy.

Final thoughts?
Yes, you can absolutely stand on the Prime Meridian in Greenwich for free—and honestly, it’s one of those “we did that!” moments that made for some great photos and we will be able to talk about for years to come.
