We are closing out a rough week thanks to a little hurricane called Irma. Safe to say all Floridians are a bit bleary-eyed and tired. We capped off this awesome (not-so-much) week with Mr. L severely spraining his ankle.

Needless to say, when it has been a particularly stressful week, I usually hit my comfort food… ice cream. Call it an unhealthy habit. I am an out and proud #stresseater. So, I knew this weekend we needed to get out of the house for a bit of fun and I wanted to try someplace new here in O-Town. We found a gem!

The Frozen Nitrogen ice cream parlor near UCF uses science to make the creamiest ice cream ever!

Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream just opened in the UCF area about a month ago. It’s where science meets dessert.

Even the hours on the door are listed as “lab hours.” Who knew science could be cute?

Mr. L has a chemistry degree so when I saw some pics on yelp of this place that decorates with paintings of atoms AND makes ice cream, I immediately knew it is a spot we could both love.

Guys, I don’t do science. I tease that God played a gag on me when I married a math teacher with a chemistry degree. All I remember from chemistry is something about a mole and almost burning my high school down with a bunsen burner (true story).

But, when the chemistry is making my ice cream…kids, I am paying attention.

When we walked in, we were immediately greeted. It was earlier in the evening and not crowded. I was hooked the second I was told that I could…wait for it… mix as many flavors as I wanted! Are you kidding me!? I could have died happy right there. It’s possible because they make the ice cream from scratch…in front of you. (I’m just gonna give you a minute to get your jaw off the floor.)

You first pick your base… ice cream, yogurt or coconut milk.  Then, you pick your flavor. (I seriously had the not so kid appropriate song What’s your Flava stuck in my head as this was happening)

The selection of choices was respectable. You give me chocolate and peanut butter…I am gonna be a happy girl. I threw in nutella…well…because I could. Mr. L went with some sea salt caramel awesomeness and the kiddos went with some traditional cookie dough and strawberry ice cream respectively ( sprinkles, of course.)

Even the Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream Menu is cool...in a geeky kind of way.

At $4.55 for a regular serving, plus $0.25 per mix-in topping, it is easy to think that you could do better at the local DQ ( no hate, DQ…I still love the blizzards). BUT, after science does its thing with your dessert, you end up with a decent size portion of ice cream…and the show is worth it!

Ice Cream is made from scratch using frozen nitrogen at Frozen Nitrogen Ice Cream in Orlando, FL

Josiah and Jessie enjoyed watching the liquid nitrogen freeze their ice cream into existence.

Since liquid nitrogen is -320 degrees Fahrenheit, it creates the ice cream in less than a minute. A few ingredients were put in the mixer, a blast of science was added and we had the purest, creamiest ice cream I have had in a long time! The nitrogen supposedly gets the ice crystals incredibly fine ( due to the extremely frigid temperature) leading to the creaminess. I don’t know how that happens. I read it on a sign. But I do know it made crazy good ice cream!

As an added touch, the spoons even change color. The kids loved this!

To ease any safety concerns, it is important to note that the nitrogen used actually evaporates into a gas before the ice cream even hits your dish… so it isn’t actually present by the time you are entering your sugar coma, making the whole process completely safe.

Josiah mentioned getting two brain freezes but asked me today when we would be going again. I can’t wait myself. If you are in the area, definitely stop by, get your lab rat game on and enjoy some amazing molecule-created sweet treats.
