Like most of us, it probably is. The cost of travel or taking a vacation can be overwhelming and it seems to rise year after year. So finding ways to make it a bit cheaper is what this post is all about.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to get away and recharge.

The reason you’re most likely finding vacations that are priced so high is because of where you’re looking and what time you’re looking at going. So to help you shave potentially hundreds off your final vacation tally, here are some thoughts on how you can save money.

Booking

Where you’re actually going plays a big part in how expensive the vacation is. You could spend thousands on a trip to Bora Bora, whereas you could spend just a few hundred on a spot a little closer to home. You need to think logically about your destination and just accept if some destinations are out of the reach of your current budget. It doesn’t mean they always will be. The more affordable you go, the better time you’re going to have.

Make sure you’re shopping around and getting the best deal possible.

You can consider credit cards that will allow you to build up a certain amount of points per amount of money you spend.

These points are then converted into air miles. After a year of using the card on everyday purchases, you could find that you’ve earned enough points to get you to your chosen destination and back. Then all you’d have to pay for was the hotel and spending money. This can easily shave hundreds off your vacation package price.

You can find the best credit card for airline miles on the internet. Just make sure you’re shopping around so that you pick a card to give you the most rewards with as little interest as possible. Of course, only use credit cards if you can manage them wisely and ideally pay them off every month.

The other option, maybe slightly riskier cost-wise, is to wait until the last minute and search for a cheap deal.

This doesn’t always work, and the variety of destinations you can go to might be smaller. But if you do find the trip of your choice you’ll most likely find it at a massively discounted rate.

While You’re There

Purchasing souvenirs and going on excursions can rack up quite the bill. (This post features 50 Great Ways to Save Money on Vacation. It is directed towards a British audience, but the tips are universal).

If you’re doing an all-inclusive vacation, things might be a little easier. If not, you’re most likely going to be spending a fortune. Make sure you save up enough, and more, to cover not just the journey, but the expenses of the vacation while there. If you know you’re going to be out eating and drinking every night, accommodate for this. If you’re all-inclusive, make the most of it. It is nice to go out for a meal once or twice to explore the area, but try and stay in the hotel as much as possible for food.
