With the holidays coming around the corner, traveling is one of the best things that you can do for yourself.

After working hard and having way too many obligations and day to day stress… a nice, long vacation can make all the struggles worth it.

Usually when you go on a vacation, you just want to treat yourself with those fancy cocktails and the local cuisine.

Usually when you go on a vacation, you just want to treat yourself with those fancy cocktails and the local cuisine.

After all, you deserve it. You have been dreaming of just lying on the beach and working on your suntan.

But working on your suntan shouldn’t be the only thing you’re working on during your free days.

Exercise when traveling may be the last thing on your mind. But, a vacation shouldn’t be a reason to let yourself go and lose your figure. Even though we all tend to come back from vacation a few pounds heavier, you can choose not to let that happen on your next trip. Here are some simple exercise tips to help you stay fit and healthy while on vacation.

Maintain a Workout Routine

As we are all different people and we all have different preferences and ambitions when it comes to our exercise routines, so this tip is very individual.

If you are the type of person that only gets fully motivated  in a gym, you can keep that in mind when you start looking for accommodations.

A lot of hotels and hostels have their own gyms where you can do a quick routine that doesn’t require a lot of time but will do wonders for keeping your shape.

You can also research the gyms in the area where you will be staying and find some gyms where day-to-day payment is acceptable. Visiting the gym three times during your ten-day vacation can make a significant difference.

A great type of workout for a vacation is HIIT, which means high-intensity interval training.

The purpose of this type of exercise is to produce maximum results in the shortest amount of time. If you don’t want to spend your time in a gym, you can always find exercises that are suitable to do in your hotel room or even in the nearby park.

Stay active

If you really want a vacation from everything including your workout routine- that is okay, too.

After all, you are on vacation in a new and exciting place perhaps, so it’s only natural that you would prefer enjoying the destination other than working out in your room.

But this doesn’t have to mean that you can’t do anything else to contribute to keeping you in good shape.

All the small decisions that you make during your vacation will make a difference.

Instead of going up with the elevator, always take the stairs.

Don’t call an Uber or a taxi if you’re walking a significant  distance. Get the blood flowing instead.

Visiting a new place is the perfect opportunity for being active and adventurous.

If you’re visiting a tropical destination or a place with a pool, make sure you take a plunge because swimming is an excellent workout for the whole body.

Try to see natural parks, hike some popular trails, or visit some amazing secluded locations that would require walking or climbing up a hill.

Hiking is a great way to exercise and enjoy your vacation destination at the same time.

If you’re going on a winter vacation try skiing, sledding or even snow hiking- it will all work out in your favor.

There are countless activities like surfing, yoga, beach games, snorkeling, rock climbing, kayaking, pilates, tennis, and many more that you can explore on your vacation.

These are all great ways to get important exercise and have fun at the same time!

Be careful with the food

Experiencing the local cuisine is one of the great perks of traveling and it would be a shame to not enjoy some of the local flavors.

For example, if you go to Italy, you have to try some pasta and pizzas, and if you go to Thailand, you have to try Thai food.

However, if the goal is to try to stay in shape, you will have to be a little bit careful with trying out foods since all the working out will not help if you keep stuffing yourself with high-calorie foods. Here are some tips on how to do that:

  • Don’t forget breakfast: it’s the most important meal of the day. It will give you plenty of energy for the first part of the day. When possible, choose a hotel or hostel that serves breakfast. This way you will always have plenty of oats, fruits, and nuts at your disposal for having a good breakfast.

  • Carry a protein/granola bar with you: in case of extreme hunger, having an easy to access source of protein will restore your energy in between meals.

  • Buy your own groceries: if you have access to a kitchen, stock up on fruits, veggies and proteins. This is also a great way to save some money while travelling.

  • Don’t eat two bad meals in a row: if you know that you will try the local cuisine for dinner tonight, try to have a healthy lunch and a healthy breakfast the morning after. This way you can get the best of both worlds.

  • Order smaller portions: when we’re hungry we tend to over-order, and then we eat the food because we don’t want it to go to waste. That’s why ordering smaller portions is a wise choice.

  • Be careful with alcohol: a vacation is a great excuse to indulge, . But  alcohol has a lot of calories and drinking every night is not a good decision. If you want to drink, choose good wines, liquors or light beers since these are the best options. Cocktails and combos of alcohol and energy drinks are the worst! Try to avoid them.

  • Hydrate: do not forget to drink plenty of water! If you want to mix it up choose tea that is rich in antioxidants. Avoid sodas and other sugary drinks!

And the last and one of the most essential tips that you have to keep in mind while traveling is to have fun!

Don’t get too stressed out with counting every calorie and feeling bad after every meal.

After all, this is your vacation, and the point is to relax and get some rest from everyday life. Just keep in mind that every little movement counts!
